FORMER president Olusegun Obasanjo has said , the oil and gas industry can no longer provide for Nigeria’s expanding population.

Obasanjo gave a speech over the weekend at his penthouse apartment at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, to the leadership of the leading sociocultural organization in Benue State’s Tiv territory, Mzough U Tiv (MUT).

According to him only agriculture and agribusiness, could deal with the nation’s expanding population.

In order to diversify Nigeria’s economy away from its reliance on oil, he urged citizens to concentrate on agriculture and agribusiness.

“If Nigeria is ready to get it right, the 2023 election should be a turning point. We should not go for emotion that will destroy us,” Obasanjo, who was conferred with the title of a “Great Warrior” of Tiv land by the socio-political group, said.

Earlier, Chief Iorbee Ihagh, the President-General of the Tiv body, asked the former president’s assistance regarding the necessity of establishing a fruit juice business in Benue State, the agitation for inclusive national politics, herders’ attacks on Tiv land, and the power-sharing formula.
